IP Rating FAQs

The IP Rating system provides universal guidelines to customers so they know how safe it is to use specific products in a variety of applications. Rather than saying a product is “waterproof” or “dust-tight,” the IP Rating gives the customer a clear idea of how protected the product is against moisture and dust ingress.

The first digit signifies the level of protection against solids. This number ranges from 0-6, and, the higher the number, the better protected the electrical device is from smaller particles, such as dust.

The second digit signifies the level of protection against liquids. This number ranges from 0 to 9, and, the higher the number, the better protected the electrical device is from high-pressure water and water immersion.

The answer to this depends on your product application. Check out our IP Rating chart so you can determine which IP rating meets your specific needs.
