What are IP Ratings?
The IP (Ingress Protection) rating system is defined in international standard IEC 605029. IP ratings are used to classify and define ingress protection on electrical devices against solids and water. By defining a rating, the IP system ensures specific levels of coverage when products are faced with varying elements.
IP Ratings have two digits that provide measurements of varying levels of protection for electrical devices. The first digit indicates the level of protection against solids. This number ranges from 0 to 6, and the higher the number, the better protected the electrical device is from smaller particles, such as dust. The second digit indicates the level of moisture protection. This number ranges from 0 to 9, and, the higher the number, the better protected the electrical device is from high-pressure water and water immersion.
