Troubleshooting Guide - ArjentS2 and Legend Lightbars
We all know that emergency vehicle systems are more complex today, even with the advantages of the simpler design of ROC technology. The advanced design of the ArjentS2 and Legend lightbars greatly reduces potential connection - point problems versus older technology but we are still working on designing the perfect product for a less-than perfect world.
We constantly ask our customers how we can improve service and support. Many of you have said that all manufacturers could do a better job of providing troubleshooting information for their products in an easily-accessible location, such as our website.
If you should encounter a problem, here are some tips to help you troubleshoot the system. Of course, our Service Department is still just a phone call away at 1-800-433-9132.
Thank you for your support of Federal Signal products!
» My lightbar won't do anything at all
- Verify that the serial interface module (SIM) has the RS485 connected and there are no bent pins in the sockets.
- Verify that the bar's main power wires are connected to a good battery source.
- Check the connections on the interface module. Make sure that:
- The black and black/white wires are connected to ground.
- The white wire is connected to switched +12vdc ignition.
- A mode wire is connected to switched +12vdc.
- Make sure the ground wire from the bar controller PCB (PC board) to the extrusion is tightly connected.
- Verify the dip switch settings are set to "off" on the SIM.
- Check the active state of the cut off features. If dip switch one on the SIM is on (down position) make sure the cutoff wires are connected to +12vdc.
- Cut back and secure any unused wires from the interface cable to prevent short circuits.
- Try a new RS485 cable.
» My lightbar turns off when the halogen lights activate
- Make sure the battery is fully charged.
- Check the main power and ground connections for the bar. Check these connections in the bar and at the vehicle.
» Only one takedown works
- Check the connections from the Arjent S2 bar controller to the ROC boards and make sure they are in the proper locations. J9 = Driver Side(DS), J8 = Driver Inside(DI), J6 = Center(C1), J5 = Pass. Side(PS), J2 = Pass. Inside(PI) J1 = Center (C2)(53" lightbar only) (See Fig. 1)
- Check the connections from the Legend bar controller to the ROC boards and make sure they are in the proper locations. J9 = Driver Side(DS), J8 = Driver Inside(DI), J6 = Center(C1), J5 = Pass. Side(PS), J1 = Pass. Inside(PI) (See Fig. 2)
- Check bulbs to ensure they are properly seated in the sockets. Look for bent prongs or burned bulbs.
- Swap ROC PCB with PCB on opposite side of lightbar.
» Takedowns come on instead of alley lights
» A halogen light stays on with ignition power applied
- Make sure there is no voltage on the corresponding activation wire.
- Swap the PCB with a similar PCB to see if it is a ROC PCB problem. If the problem goes away, replace the PCB.
- Swap the cables on the bar controller PCB outputs with a known good output. If the problem moves to another halogen light send the bar controller PCB in for repair.
» The SignalMaster does not work
- Check the jumper settings on the bar controller PCB and the SIM. Make sure they are both set for the desired operation. External and internal settings are configurable. The external SignalMaster is set at the factory. Positions are: up/off for external and down/on for internal.
- Make sure SW-2 switch 4 on the SIM is in the correct position for desired operation and ignition power was removed and reapplied.
- Check the connections at the SignalMaster controller. If the controller is a SS2000SM make sure the connector has power and ground connected to pins 10 and 11 on the SignalMaster plug. Refer to Manual 255284E for SS2000SM installation.
- If using a SmartSiren, reconfigure operation from 8-lamp to 6-lamp.
» The lightbar has a delayed response to being turned off
- Make sure the electrical connections are kept separate from the strobe supplies.
- Check all ground connections, especially on the SIM.
» LED module will not light
- Check the cable connection from the bar controller PCB to the affected ROC PCB.
- Swap ROC PCB with PCB on opposite side of lightbar.
- Make sure the bar controller PCB is set as shown in Fig. 5 (Arjent S2) and Fig. 6 (Legend)
- If the affected module is part of the SignalMaster, check the connections.
» Half of LED module will not light
- Call Federal Signal's Service Department at 800-433-9132 - please have the PCB label information available.
» Lightbar operates erratically
- Check voltage of the battery for a minimum of +11vdc.
- Check interface module and lightbar control jumper settings to see if they are set correctly for external or internal SignalMaster operation. Positions are: up/off for external and down/on for internal.
» Lightbar does not turn off
- If using a headlight flasher and connecting to a switch with one of the mode wires, the high beam override may back feed into the system and cause a malfunction. Isolate the headlight flasher to see if the problem is resolved. If it is resolved, install a SPST relay to isolate the headlight flasher.
» Driver's side only of the Legend lightbar is inoperable
- Check for lock washers under grounding tree and tighten nut.
